When Life Hands You Lemons...

Well, it’s been a little over a month since I found out that I was no longer necessary at my former company. I had fooled myself into thinking that I was indispensible but was proven quite wrong, and to be honest, was quite hurt. So I spent the next week wallowing in self-pity and growing anxiety over how to help support my family. My spouse, wonderful guy that he is, let me go 4 days without showering and crying in bed while watching bad TV; after a while, I got sick of myself and crept back into the real world.

Once I did that, I realized a couple of things: 1) The world didn’t stop because I had temporarily lost my footing. And that meant I still had a family to be a part of. 2) Deep down, I was more than relieved that I was no longer part of the corporate world. I had been working steadily since I was in college and I was bone tired. Not only was I tired, but I was increasingly chaffing at some of the “stuff” I dealt with on a daily basis. Having to be “on” at work 40+ hours a week didn’t leave much for my family or me.

It was while sorting through all of this in my head that I realized there were two things I wanted more than anything: to be able to stay home and take care of my home and my awesome kid and to be able to turn my passion (photography) into something more than a hobby and a skill on my resume. So with the support of my hubby (who talks me off the ledge more than any one person should), I am embarking on a new journey. A journey that includes spending the summer with my daughter, improving my sewing, and taking lots of photos.

I am sure there will be times when I wonder if I am doing the right thing and when I question my sanity (nothing new), but the most important thing I have learned this last month is that I am indispensible to my friends and family.

So when life handed my lemons, I decided to not only make lemonade, but use some of the zest and start living the life I want!
